The Hellenic Association Club of Western Australia Inc. Founded circa March 1918 and Incorporated 1 May 1919It’s founding Trustees were Diamond Falangas and Theodore Mathewdakis and the Founding President was 36-year-old Thrasyvoulos Koutsouvellis (b. circa 1882)The objective of the Hellenic Association of WA was to cater for the neglected social and cultural needs of young Greek males and with the growing exclusiveness of the Castellorizian Brotherhood (1912), the establishment of a broader based organisation was necessary. The Hellenic Association became the first Pan-Hellenic organisation in WA The Association opened a premises at 507 Wellington Street Perth and by 1930 had relocated to occasionally shared premises (with the Castellorizian Brotherhood) at 407 Wellington Street Perth, which is where the Association would be based for the next 35 years. The Association moved to its current premises at 75 Stirling Street Perth in 1965.At the AGM held on 23rd April 1950, it was agreed that the word “Club” be added after the word “Association”, and by 10th May 1950, the official name of the Hellenic Association of Western Australia had become the Hellenic Association Club of Western Australia On the 2nd July 1951 the Association purchased "Adela House" at 75 Stirling Street Perth for the sum of £16,500 after a secret ballot taken at an EGM the day prior. This decision was a watershed moment for the Association, the value of which would become evident with the fullness of time. In 1967, the current premises of the Club were built, named at the time the "Hellenic Centre". The venue opened on 1st December 1967.In 1999, the Club undertook a major renovation, and a second level was added at the rear of the premisesBy 2008, after a rebranding undertaken by the youthful and energetic committee at the time, the centre was now named the "Hellenic Club" At the 2013 AGM, Theo Sarris was elected president with the Club's cash position standing at approx. $34,000 in debt.Over the next 4 years, his team comprising of Vice President Paul Katris, Treasurer Minas Samaras and Secretary Socrates Bakaimis, and various other Committee members, turned the fortunes of the Club around by clearing the debt. By November 2017, the Club's cash position had dramatically improved compared to 2013, standing at $117,000 clear, even after significant amounts were spent on renovations and air conditioning in 2015/16. The committee commissioned a history book “ENOSIS” by Dr John Yiannakis OAM in 2016, to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the Club and was subsequently launched in September 2018.There followed three somewhat turbulent years until an EGM was called for 4th April 2021, where elections were held. A new committee with experienced personnel from the past was elected. At present, early 2022, the Club now approaching its 104th year, is in a strong financial position, with the well-attended fortnightly Taverna Nights in 2021, 2 successful Dinner Dances in June and October with over 220 in attendance causing the Club’s cash reserve to vastly improve since the EGM of April 2021.
